About this Trek

Riverside Park runs along the Hudson on Manhattan's Upper West Side. This Trek walks its most beloved stretch, north from Pier I at 70th Street to the volunteer-grown 91st Street Garden.

The Hudson's steady current is the whole idea: it sets a tempo no city block can, and the walk is about matching your steps and breath to it. You start out on the pier, stop at the stone arches of the 79th Street Rotunda, then walk a long open stretch built out over the river with a voice alongside you until it goes quiet and hands the rest of the way back to you, finishing among growing things in the garden.

A paved, flowing walk for Calm, Clarity, and Reflection, with breeze off the water most of the way. Best at sunrise or golden hour, when the river catches the light. Subway (1/2/3 to 72nd or 96th St); benches and restrooms throughout.

Waypoint Moments

Key spots along the route with guided practices and nature highlights.

1
Pier I at 70th Street reaching into the Hudson River
Pier I @ 70th St
Begin out on the pier, where the boardwalk reaches into the Hudson and the city falls away behind you. Sky on three sides, water below. Settle your weight, take a few slow breaths, and let the river set your pace before you head north.

Rotunda and Riverside Walk
Stone arches stand above the waterfront path, and the river keeps a slow, steady beat against the edge below the rail. Stop here and let your breathing lengthen — then keep walking. This one stays with you, out along the walk built over the river, before it goes quiet and hands the rest of the stretch back to you.

The 91st Street Garden
The path leaves the water, turns in among the trees, and slips through the Crabapple Grove into a small volunteer-tended garden — the living, community heart of the park. Close here among growing things, and name one thing you'll tend in your own week before stepping back to the street.
